Fatherhood: Life of a Single Father
For a very long time, I have noticed that people have always talked about motherhood or more specifically single mothers throughout entertainment media but not too much talk centering around single fathers; unless they are being displayed as deadbeats, are in jail, or are some sort of drug dealer. So, I’ve decided that the best way to dive deeper into this hidden community is to capture this lifestyle through photos and words. The fathers in this project are all from the state of New York. Some live upstate and some live in New York City. With help from City Dad Groups, Real Dad Network, and some friends, I was able to meet these amazing fathers and hear their stories. The fathers that I have met are either fighting for custody over their children, have already won custody of their children, or had their children through surrogacy. I was able to interview these fathers and spend a few days with them which not only helped me get a better understanding of them but I was also able to build a relationship between them. By visiting these fathers in their homes and shadowing them throughout the day, I was able to answer these few questions about how and why they became single fathers, what a typical week would look like for them, and what makes the bonds between a father and child so strong.
